Re-emigration 2026: Returning to Poland, Citizenship, and the Polish Passport

According to current migration data, an increasing number of Poles and people of Polish descent are choosing to return to Poland. Many of them may not realize that they hold Polish citizenship or that they can easily regain or obtain it.

Returning to Polish Roots: Polish Citizenship for Emigrants and Their Descendants

For years Polish migration has primarily been directed from Poland to the United Kingdom, the United States, and other Western countries. In recent years, however, we have observed a significant shift in this regard.

For years Polish migration has primarily been directed from Poland to the United Kingdom, the United States, and other Western countries. In recent years, however, we have observed a significant shift in this regard.

Between 2017 and 2024, approximately 300,000 emigrants returned to the country. According to statistics, currently about 18–20 million Poles and people of Polish descent live outside Poland, with about one-third of them having been born in Poland.

Many of these people, upon returning to Poland or visiting our country for the first time, are unaware that they actually hold Polish citizenship or can easily obtain it. In this context, it is worth noting the following:

  • Confirmation of Polish citizenship – applies to individuals who held Polish citizenship and never lost it, as well as descendants of Polish citizens who inherited it from their ancestors,
  • Regaining Polish citizenship – applies to individuals who held Polish citizenship and lost it after leaving Poland,
  • Granting of Polish citizenship by the President of Poland – this applies to individuals who have never held Polish citizenship and did not inherit it from their ancestors, but who identify as Polish, are part of the Polish community, participate in Polish culture, celebrate Polish national holidays, etc.
