Fingerprint ID cards coming soon

According to the assumptions of the project, the electronic layer of the ID card will contain holder’s fingerprints as biometric data. They will not be collected from a person under the age of 12 and from a person where fingerprinting is physically impossible. For example, if a person with fingerprints will not be able to reproduce them temporarily (due to e.g. immobilization or dressing of a limb), such ID will be valid for 12 months.

The ID card will contain a copy of the fingerprint, and the fingerprints will be taken using a special reader. The draft act aims at adaptation of Polish law to Regulation (EU) 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 20, 2019 increasing the security of identity cards.

The act is planned to come into force in August 2021.
