New EU regulation – plastic packaging disappears from the market!

The European Commission has proposed a new regulation replacing the current directive, meaning the provisions will take effect directly 18 months after their publication in the EU Official Journal. On December 16, 2024, member states approved the new law, completing the legislative process.

Once published in the Official Journal, the regulation will become binding.

How will the new EU regulations change the packaging market?

Key provisions include:

  • By 2029, 90% of single-use plastic and metal beverage containers must be collected separately, e.g., through deposit systems.
  • From 2030, all packaging must be recyclable “in an economically viable way.”
  • Ban on miniature plastic packaging for cosmetics, such as those offered in hotels.
  • Food products like ketchup, mustard, or coffee creamer will no longer be allowed in single-use plastic packaging.
  • Plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables sold in quantities below 1.5 kg will be phased out.
  • Very lightweight plastic bags will be banned, except for packaging bulk food.
  • From 2030, food and beverage distributors offering takeout must allow consumers to use their own containers.

From 2030, all packaging must be recyclable "in an economically viable way."

Will the EU meet its waste reduction targets by 2040?

The regulation supports the European Green Deal, aiming to reduce packaging waste by 5% by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040 compared to 2018 levels.
