90% of non-cash payments in Poland are made in a similar way, according to the Mastercard survey

Poles consider this method of non-cash payment to be the safest. 54% of the respondents admit that they chose this form due to the prevailing pandemic, although as many as 89% of the respondents declare that they will continue to pay touchlessly once the epidemic threat ceases. Interestingly, in the first quarter of this year the percentage of contactless payments with Mastercard cards (90%) was higher than in the whole Europe (78%). The greatest advantages of this model were indicated by the respondents: hygiene (90%) and greater safety than cash payment (85%). For 70% of the respondents it is the first choice among the available models of payment for purchases during a pandemic. Convenience and speed were also mentioned as advantages of contactless payments.

The places where consumers use such payments most often are: grocery stores (98%), pharmacies (81%) and other retail stores (46%). The increase in the popularity of contactless payments was undoubtedly due to the limit of payments without PIN (from PLN 50 to 100) increased by Mastercard. Among Polish consumers, the most popular contactless payment instrument remains a debit or credit card (96%). 36% of respondents use payment by phone and 2% use devices that are part of their clothing, such as a watch or fitness wristband. 82% of Polish consumers admitted to changing their old proximity card. 95% of those surveyed say that switching to proximity payments is easy.

The results of the survey show a very clear trend, but still a huge potential for development and diversification of the contactless payments market in Poland.
